Periodontistry

Periodontistry is the medical/surgical specialty of Dentistry that studies prevention, diagnose and treatment of diseases that affect the tissue that give support to the organs for the maintenance of health, function and aesthetics of the teeth and their adjacent tissues.

The main periodontal diseases that affect the teeth are periodontitis and gingivitis.

Nowadays, with the discovery of Implantology, Periodontistry is also in charge of prevention and treatment of implant related diseases like peri-implatitis.

Periodontal disease shows up as gingivitis (swelling and bleeding of the gums without affecting the bone) or as periodontitis, in which case it starts causing degeneration of the bone that supports the tooth, being the culprit of tooth loss on the long run.
